BaT Auction: 1968 BMW 1600
This 1968 BMW 1600 is a Granada Red example which underwent a refurbishment completed fewer than 400 miles ago in 2017. The work included new paint, interior refreshment, and a suspension overhaul as well as fitment of a 2.0L inline-four with dual Weber carburetors, a 5-speed manual gearbox, and a 3.90:1 differential. The car was recently acquired by the seller from the estate of a close friend and is now offered with a clean North Carolina title in the seller’s name.
The car was reportedly stripped to the shell prior to being repainted in Granada Red. Exterior gaskets, weather stripping, and brightwork were replaced along with the locking strips for the rear window and windshield. The seller notes the Euro-style rear bumper would benefit from being rechromed.
Painted steel wheels feature polished BMW-branded hubcaps and a pair of Hella lights is mounted to the front bumper. The suspension was fitted with new rubber bushings as well as Bilstein shocks and strut inserts.
The interior features a new headliner, seat upholstery, and carpets as well as a 3-spoke Nardi steering wheel. Switchgear and VDO gauges are shown up close in the gallery below.
The odometer currently displays 18k miles, with total chassis mileage unknown. Per the seller, approximately 400 miles have been added since completion of the refurbishment.
The replacement 2.0L M10 inline-four reportedly uses an OEM crankshaft, pistons, rods, valve gear, and camshafts. Induction is from dual Weber 45mm sidedraft carburetors. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox from an E21 3-Series and a 3.90:1 differential. Underhood fasteners have been replaced with gold cadmium-plated pieces, and new rubber hoses were fitted throughout.
Undercoating was applied during the aforementioned repaint. A pair of underbody photos is provided to shown the general condition of the chassis, suspension, and drivetrain. A video of the car running through its gears is viewable below.
