BaT Auction: 1987 BMW 535is 5-Speed

This 1987 BMW 535is shows just over 87k miles and was sold new at Zipper BMW of Beverly Hills, California in 1988. The 3.5-liter M30 inline-six is said to be unmodified and is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. Acquired by the seller from the original owner two months ago, this example is finished in Alpine White over a Llama leather interior and comes with extensive records. It was placed in storage by the original owner for roughly 20 years, and significant maintenance has been performed within the last 300 miles to return the car to roadworthiness, including replacement fuel and cooling components, drive belt and gasket replacements, the clutch, and more as detailed below. Style 5 wheels have been added, and new tires were also installed. This E28 is now offered by the seller with its original manuals, recent California smog certification, clean Carfax and AutoCheck reports, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

This example is finished in Alpine White (146), and evidence of paintwork by the original owner is shown on the rear passenger-side quarter panel. Per the seller, the car shows no evidence of accidents or bodywork, and several matching body panel VIN tags can be seen in the gallery below. The seller notes some scratches to the front spoiler, and the bumper features new OEM impact strips.

16″ Style 5 wheels come from an E38 740iL and wear Neuton NT tires installed by the seller. The factory TRX wheel set is included in the sale.

The cabin is finished in Llama leather upholstery, with sagging present on the seat cushions and wear noted to the driver’s outer bolster. The factory 3-spoke steering wheel is retained, and gallery photos highlight the crack-free dash surface.

Per the seller, the front lower control arm bushings could benefit from replacement, and the muffler contains a small hole.
