BaT Auction: 12k-Mile 1982 DeLorean DMC-12 5-Speed
This 1982 DeLorean DMC-12 shows just over 12k miles and was purchased by the seller in 2013. The 2.85L V6 and 5-speed manual transaxle are said to remain stock, though front lowering springs have been added along with KYB shocks all around. Carfax data back to 2002 shows one Michigan owner prior to the seller, who has added 1,500 miles during his ownership. In June 2018, $5k of cosmetic and mechanical repairs were performed by Ely Ross Restorations, including refinishing exterior trim, cleaning the fuel tank, installing a new fuel pump and alternator, adding new door seals, and more as described below. This DeLorean is now being offered with a clean Carfax, receipts for recent service, a collection of spare parts, and a clean Michigan title in the seller’s name.
Door seals were recently replaced by the seller, who notes some recent repairs due to water entering the interior. A new radiator was also installed, and the fuse box and other wiring were repaired. The car rides slightly lower than stock over new KYB shocks and front lowering springs. Stock 14″ alloy wheels wear 195/60 BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires.
Giugiaro-designed bodywork is rendered in brushed stainless steel over a combination fiberglass/steel backbone chassis. A walk-around video is included above.
Around 9k DMC-12s were built, an estimated 6,500 of which are believed to still exist today. The front and rear cowlings, windshield trim, and front and rear bumpers were recently refinished on this example, and rust was repaired on the front frame extensions in 2015.
The cabin is trimmed in grey leather, and recent repairs are itemized in an invoice pictured in the gallery below. The doors open and close properly, though the power antenna is currently inoperative and a spare is included. The odometer shows 12,185 miles, and the seller has added 1,500 miles in five years of driving.
A five-minute interior walk-around video further details the condition of the interior and notes outstanding items such as loose glovebox upholstery and a torn driver-side trim piece. The A/C is said to function as intended.
Front trunk storage is pictured above, and gallery photographs show the factory spare fiberglass floor.
The rear-mounted 2.85L V6 was designed by Peugeot/Renault/Volvo (PRV) and built under contract for DMC. The 5-speed manual gearbox was also PRV-designed. The louvered engine cover on this car was recently refinished, and the alternator, radiator, fans, and fuel pump were replaced. The fuel tank has also been cleaned and new fuel lines were installed.
The seller notes some surface corrosion underneath along with previous rust repairs on front chassis members. Brakes were rebuilt in 2015, and the clutch and associated hydraulics were replaced at that time. Additional lift shots can be seen in the gallery below.
Itemized receipts for work performed during the seller’s ownership total around $8k and can be seen in the gallery.
A large collection of included spares is detailed in the video above.
A recent Carfax records data between 2002-2015, showing an accident-free history under two owners in Michigan, with occasional service visits reported.
A drive-by video is included above, and several other videos showing a cold start, engine running footage, and other details can be found on the seller’s YouTube page.
