Facelifted Euro-Spec VW Passat Getting New-And-Improved Powertrains
One of the most significant changes will be the inclusion of additional plug-in hybrid models across the range. Currently, those looking for a hybrid Passat are forced to purchase the top-spec GTE trim.
In the new model, the plug-in hybrid powertrain will be offered across the rest of the range without forcing customers to dig too deep into their bank accounts.
The existing powertrain consists of a 1.4-liter turbo four with 154 hp and a 114 hp electric motor. Volkswagen will equip the hybrid Passat models with a 13 kWh battery to deliver roughly 44 miles (70 km) of all-electric range. This enlarged battery will also reduce the car’s CO2 emissions down to 36g/km.
Alongside the hybrid system, the current 1.4-liter turbo used by the Passat will be replaced by a new 1.5-liter engine. Modifications will also be made to the remaining petrol and diesel engines to improve efficiency.
A host of styling changes will help the new Passat stand out from its predecessor. For example, the front fascia will adopt a revised lower section, different air intakes and a tweaked grille, while redesigned taillights will probably be on the menu, too.
Inside, limited changes are expected, as the current Passat already shares much of its cabin with the premium Arteon.
The new VW Passat will premiere early next year before landing in dealerships around the world shortly after.
