BaT Auction: 1954 MG TF
This 1954 MG TF is finished in light grey over black leather and is powered by 1,250cc XPAG four paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The car was the recipient of refurbishment beginning in 1999 and lasting several years. Receipts are not available, and the story of the TF is told through letters from previous owners as well as appraisals and insurance inspections available for viewing the the photo gallery. The reported work included an engine rebuild, the installation of the 5-speed transmission, suspension and brake overhauls, a bare-metal repaint, and more. The seller acquired the car nine years ago and has added 1,500 of the 41k miles shown. This TF is located in Canada and is offered with the aforementioned letters, appraisals, recent receipts, service parts manual, workshop manual, tonneau cover, and a clean Ontario title.
The body was disassembled and stripped prior to painting, and a crack in the finish above the driver’s front bumper mount is noted.
Stock wheels are painted silver and wear polished caps and Nexen SB-802 tires. The bumpers have overriders both fore and aft, and a period luggage rack is installed.
The banjo steering wheel fronts a trio of octagonal gauges and a dash trimmed in black. Leather pleated upholstery covers the seats and a black carpet kit has been fitted. Seat belts have been installed, and a tan tonneau cover is shown on the gallery below.
The 1,250cc is equipped with twin SU carburetors breathing through Vokes pancake-style air cleaners. A finned aluminum valve cover has been installed along with braided fuel and oil lines. A 5-speed transmission was added in 2008 at a reported cost of $6k. The oil was changed earlier this year.
The refurbishment included brake and suspension overhauls, the refinishing of components, and the replacement of both wood and steel panels. Additional undercarriage photos are available in the gallery, as are photos of emails and letters from previous owners detailing the work performed.
