BaT Auction: 1960 Metropolitan Convertible
This 1960 Metropolitan convertible is finished in red and white over a black interior and powered by a 1.5L inline-four paired with a 3-speed manual transmission. The car is fitted with a Continental kit and was repainted under previous ownership, while more recent work included replacement of the shocks and clutch cylinders during the seller’s 8-year ownership. This Metropolitan is offered with manuals, rear fender skirts, a set of sway bars, a single-wheel trailer axle, show paraphernalia, and a clean Washington State title in the seller’s name.
Metropolitans were assembled by the Austin Motor Company in England, and this example is finished in red over white with a black soft top. The car was reportedly repainted under previous ownership. A quarter panel scuff and other blemishes are shown in gallery close-ups below.
Red-painted steel wheels with chrome hubcaps were fitted with new radial tires in 2017. The rear-mounted spare is housed in a vinyl cover.
The interior is finished in black with diamond quilted vinyl upholstery. A factory AM radio remains mounted in the dash. The single Smiths gauge houses an 85-mph speedometer and a 5-digit odometer showing approximately 83k miles.
The 1.5L BMC B-Series inline-four is mated to a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission. The clutch master and slave cylinders were replaced in 2017, with invoices for the work included in the gallery.
New shocks were also installed in 2017. Additional underbody photos can be seen in the gallery below.
The sale includes manuals, rear fender skirts, a single-wheel trailer axle, a tow bar, a set of front and rear sway bars, and a collection of model cars.
