BaT Auction: 1987 Volkswagen Transporter Single Cab Syncro
This 1987 Volkswagen Transporter Syncro is a single-cab pickup powered by a 1.6L turbodiesel inline-four paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and Steyr-Puch designed all-wheel drive system. The truck reportedly received an engine rebuild to stock specifications, a repaint and new bed floor in 2016 before its acquisition in Belgium by the selling dealer in 2018. A set of GoWesty 16″ wheels with BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires have since been installed. This Syncro is offered by the selling dealer with its removed wheels and tires, a tonneau cover, and a clean Georgia title.
The previous owner reportedly had the truck repainted in its present green and reapplied factory 4WD and Syncro graphics in 2016 as well as replacing the Bed load surface. Wooden panels coated with spray-on bedliner are installed on the vertical panel surfaces, and the truck also features a folding rear step on the tailgate. A soft tonneau cover and frame are included in the sale.
The truck is equipped with factory power mirrors and a lockable pass-through storage compartment under the bed floor. The seller installed a set of GoWesty 16″ steel wheels with new BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires measuring 215/85. A set of stock wheels with road tires is also included.
The interior features tan vinyl upholstery, brown plastics, factory-style rubber mats, and stock instrumentation. Speakers are installed in both doors, though no radio is fitted in the factory recess. Approximately 193k kilometers (~120k miles) are shown on the odometer, 2k km of which were added by the selling dealer.
A single adjustable seat is provided for the driver, with a bench for the right and center passengers. Tears are described in the seat upholstery and cracking is visible in the lower dash. Photos are provided of the cab floors with the rubber mats pulled away in the gallery below. The truck is equipped with factory power steering.
The 1.6L turbodiesel inline-four is paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle with a low-ratio Gelande first gear. The Syncro all-wheel drive system was designed and built by Steyr-Puch of Austria, and features a locking rear differential as well as a viscous center differential to send power to the front wheels. The exhaust system currently features an open turbocharger and no muffler, and the stock exhaust system will be included in the sale. The engine was rebuilt to stock specifications in 2016, and has reportedly covered just 5k kilometers since the rebuild. An oil and filter change was reportedly performed just before the seller’s acquisition and the seller has serviced the truck since his purchase.
