BaT Auction: 1969 Jaguar XKE Roadster
This 1969 Jaguar XKE Roadster was sold new a US Army colonel, who had the car repainted in black during his ownership and drove it 81k miles. The seller is the third owner and has added approximately 22k miles over 32 years. Power is supplied by a 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox, and a 1986-1988 refurbishment included an engine rebuild, removing and straightening the front subframe, sorting the wiring, and more. $26k in body and paint work was carried out in 2015, and work in 2016 included rebuilding the carburetors, refinishing the steering wheel, and fitting a new soft top. This Series II E-Type comes with a worksheet and invoices from the 1980s refurbishment, all subsequent records, a new Tourist Trophy side mirror, other spare parts, a trickle charger, and a clear Texas title in the seller’s name.
The exterior color was changed from its original Ascot Fawn to black by the original owner, and the car was repainted after the seller’s purchase in 1986. After a dump truck damaged the hood in 2008, the car was stored for over seven years while a new hood was supplied from England. A repair and full repaint was carried out in 2015 at Stuart’s Paint & Body Specialists in Dallas, Texas for a total of over $26k, with chrome trim replaced following the work.
Chrome wire wheels with knock-off hubs have been added, and Michelin Defender 205/70 tires were mounted in 2015. The seller notes some wear on the inner tire edges due to the need for an alignment, but says an alignment will be completed before the buyer collects the car. A chrome luggage rack has also been added, and a new soft top with zippered rear window was supplied by Charlie Kogan in 2016. According to the seller a stone chip in the windshield has been treated.
The interior is trimmed in beige and was refurbished in 1987 with new upholstery, carpets, seat pads, and other coverings. The seats now exhibit wear and cracking, and the 3-spoke wood steering wheel was refinished in 2016. Modifications include 3-point racing harnesses on both seats and an older aftermarket stereo system, though the head unit does not function.
The 5-digit odometer shows just under 13k miles and is believed to have rolled over once. The seller, a former judge for Jaguar Club of North America, has added around 22k miles in 32 years of ownership. The clock does not work.
The 4.2-liter XK inline-six was rebuilt in 1986 with new pistons, bearings, timing chains, and oil pump. The overhaul also included honing and boring the cylinders, grinding and polishing the crankshaft, and resurfacing the cylinder head and flywheel. The carburetors were rebuilt in 2016 by XKs Motorsport in San Luis Obispo, California, and additional work at that time included repairing the fuel pump and throttle linkage, replacing the battery, and draining the gas tank.
Records are available from throughout the seller’s ownership and include a worksheet and all receipts documenting the refurbishment that took place between 1986 and 1988 at a cost of over $27k. Invoices cover parts and labor for engine work, paint, interior, electrical, floorboard and subframe repair, and more, and samples are included in the gallery below.
Spares include a new Tourist Trophy side mirror, hose set, ignition repair set, a selection of rubber gaskets, and two new sun visors. A trickle charger, owner’s manual, and parts catalog are also included.
