BaT Auction: 1988 BMW M6
This 1988 BMW M6 is finished in Black over Silver leather interior, and is powered by a 3.5L S38B35 inline-six paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The seller purchased the car in 2016, and commissioned a repaint in the original color, replacement of trim pieces, a new dash, rebuilt brakes, instrument cluster repair, and more described below. The car has been driven in the Northeast since 1994, and the previous owner was located in the Boston, Massachusetts area. This E24 M6 shows 107k miles and is offered with a 2016 Carfax, service records, owner’s books, and a clean Pennsylvania title in the seller’s name.
The seller states that the paint was in poor condition when he purchased the car, and the $4,400 repaint effort included rust repairs to the lower sections of the rear fenders and around the left taillight prior to reapplication of the original Black (Schwarz 086). New kidney grilles, tail light assemblies, exterior trim, and window seals were fitted, and the driver’s door panel was found to be a replacement installed under prior ownership. A video provided by the seller shows the exterior up close. No accidents or other damage are recorded in the provided Carfax.
Rear self-leveling suspension components were swapped out for Bilstein dampers in 1998, and all four brake calipers are freshly rebuilt. The seller states that a recently replaced door seal requires further adjustment. E38 16″ basketweave wheels wear new Continental ExtremeContact tires, and the factory metric wheels are included and shown below.
The cabin is trimmed in Silver leather (201) over power-adjustable seats with driver’s side memory settings, and a recently-replaced dash shows small cracks around the passenger’s side parcel tray. Dinan mats protect the carpets and a short-shifter was installed by a previous owner. The center console was reportedly damaged from removal of a car phone, and a driver’s seat bolster was reupholstered. The seller notes that the power-adjustable headrests are currently inoperable. The instrument cluster was sent out to repair a broken odometer and inaccurate speedometer. 107k miles are shown, with true mileage unknown. The seller has driven 3,500 miles and believes the indicated mileage to be nearly accurate based on previous mileage reports contained in the included service records.
The rear compartment includes separate A/C controls, and the compressor was replaced prior to the sale. A few marks and scuffs are visible on the console storage lid and rear seat bolsters. A close-up video provided by the seller shows interior surfaces in greater detail.
A largely complete tool tray includes red handle driver’s and a BMW shop towel. An aftermarket CD changer and amplifier are installed in the trunk, which also stores a road hazard box and first-aid kit. A full-sized spare wheel wears a Michelin TRX tire as pictured in the gallery below.
The 3.5L S38B35 inline-six is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, and was rated at 256 horsepower in factory tune. A Dinan chip, cam sprocket, and strut tower brace were added by a previous owner in 1998.
The underside can be seen in a collection of lift shots included in the gallery below. An aftermarket stainless exhaust was installed by a previous owner and the steering center link was replaced by the seller.
A set of factory 15″ metric-sized basketweave alloy wheels are included in the sale, with matching center caps included.
A 2016 Carfax records an accident free history back to 1994 under owners in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania.
A large file of service records is included in the sale, and videos below show driving footage and the power antenna extending and retracting.
