BaT Auction: Beck 550 Spyder

BaT Auction: Beck 550 Spyder

This Porsche 550 Spyder replica is the 85th car produced by Beck and was delivered to the original California owner in 1986. The car reportedly sat unfinished for many years, and it was painted silver after the second owner acquired it in 2010. The seller purchased the still-unfinished project from the second owner in August 2018 and completed it with the addition of a red leather interior, chrome wheels, and more. Power is from a balanced and blueprinted 2,180cc VW flat-four mated to a 4-speed manual transaxle. This early Beck Spyder has been assigned a vehicle number by the California DMV and is now being offered with a top and side curtains, a faired headrest and side mirror, spares, build and purchase documents, and a California title.

The fiberglass body is patterned after a 1953-55 Porsche 550 Spyder and is mounted on a steel ladder-frame chassis. Paperwork from Beck indicates the car was originally delivered in a primer finish. It was first painted in the current silver under the second owner sometime after 2010, though the car remained un-driven at that point. The seller states that a few small blemishes are visible around the exterior.

Chromed 15″ steel wheels and hubcaps were added by the seller, along with new 185/65 Continental ContiProContact tires. A removable black top and side curtains are pictured in the gallery below, as are a headrest and side mirror with body-matching fairings.

The interior was completed by the seller, who installed full-floor square-weave carpeting and red leather bucket seats. Period-style latch-and-link lap belts are included, but not installed.

A new 3-spoke Nardi-style steering wheel includes a Porsche center cap, and instrumentation is limited to a trio of reproduction VDO gauges. 66 miles are shown, just a handful of which were added by the seller.

The balanced and blueprinted VW flat-four displaces 2,180cc and is mated to a 4-speed manual transaxle with a 3.88 final drive ratio. Details of the drivetrain include dual Weber 44 IDF carburetors, Street Eliminator heads, and more shown on the spec sheet below.
