BaT Auction: Euro-Spec 1986 BMW 325e 5-Speed at No Reserve
This 1986 BMW 325e coupe is a European-market example finished in Alpine White over a Perlbeige interior. Power is from a 2.7L M20 inline-six paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential. The car was imported under prior ownership, and purchased in March of 2018 by the selling dealer. Recent work included a manual transmission conversion, replacement of the timing belt and water pump, and other mechanical sorting detailed below. This E30 shows 210k miles and is offered at no reserve with recent service receipts and a clear Kansas title.
Body panels are finished in Alpine White (Alpinweiss 146), and the seller states that paintwork is evident on the left side, with previous repairs to the rear quarter. Noted blemishes include hail damage and a dent on the hood, clearcoat flaws on the left side, stone chips and a ding on the leading edge of the right front fender, rust on the lower edge of the driver’s door, and a crack inside the left rear wheel arch. The paint condition is further detailed in gallery closeups.
Slimmer European bumpers are equipped, along with a power sunroof. Tips from a MagnaFlow muffler exit below the rear valence, and dark tint has been applied to the cabin windows. 14” bottlecap wheels wear 205/60 Achilles tires.
The manually-adjustable front seats were removed for detailing, and the driver’s cushion was re-covered. A large bolster tear can be seen on the seat back, and other seats show cracking, tears, and deteriorated upholstery.
The dash is shown in the gallery, and an aftermarket CD player has replaced the factory head unit. The SI board currently will not reset, and the onboard computer does not illuminate properly. The seller also notes that the coolant level sensor is malfunctioning. The air conditioning system was serviced and converted to R134a. Note German labeling throughout the interior. The VDO speedometer was converted to mph at some point, and a 6-place odometer reads 210,500 miles, with true mileage unknown.
A full-size spare and partial tool kit can be found in the trunk. Trunk floor sheet metal is shown in the gallery, along with pictures of the battery compartment.
The M20 inline-six was enlarged to 2.7L in the 325e. 120 horsepower was produced at 4,250 rpm when new, with 180 lb-ft of torque available at 3,250 rpm. A 5-speed manual transmission was recently installed in place of the original automatic. Other work performed by the selling dealer included replacement of the water pump, timing belt, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, fuel filter, crank position sensor, coil, and fuel pump. An oil service was also performed.
E30 M3 control arm bushings were recently installed, and new brake pads, slotted rotors, and stainless braided brake lines were fitted under the previous owner. Additional pictures of the underbody can be seen in the gallery below. A limited-slip differential with a 2.93:1 final drive ratio was installed by the seller at the time of the transmission swap.
