Can The New Cupra Ateca Be Considered A Cut-Price Porsche Macan?

The new Cupra Ateca is the first model that was launched by Seat’s standalone Cupra brand.

The oily bits will not surprise you, as they have been widely used on a number of models within the VW Group. Under the bonnet lies the EA888 2.0-liter turbo-four, sending its power to all four wheels via a (standard) seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The main figures are 300 PS (296 hp) between 5,300rpm and 6,500rpm, and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque from 2,000 to 5,200 rpm. Cupra claims a 0-62 mph (100km/h) in 5.2 seconds, thanks partially to the standard launch control system, and a top speed of 153 mph (247km/h).

Considering the Cupra Ateca tips the scales at 1,632kg (3,597lbs), the straight-line performance is pretty impressive.

The chassis has been updated with specially tuned adaptive suspension, while the Dynamic Chassis Control gains an additional driving mode, fittingly named Cupra, as the most aggressive of the lot. Customers will also be offered an optional Performance pack, which includes goodies such as bigger brakes and bucket seats.

But the big question still remains: does the new Cupra Ateca offer an involving and fun driving experience? Let’s see what Steve Sutcliffe from Auto Express has to say.
