‘Top Gear’ Fans Riled By New Host Picks Paddy McGuinness and Andrew Flintoff

‘Top Gear’ Fans Riled By New Host Picks Paddy McGuinness and Andrew Flintoff

McGuinness and Flintoff. Sounds rather like the title for a new buddy cop film à la Starsky & Hutch or Tango & Cash, doesn’t it?

Alas, it isn’t. Paddy McGuinness and Andrew Flintoff are the two newest additions to the cast of BBC’s Top Gear program, set to appear alongside Chris Harris late in 2019. McGuinness – a British comic and actor with a career spanning more than two decades – and Flintoff – a former professional cricket player – will be taking over for actor Matt LeBlanc and car/tech journalist Rory Reid, who have chosen to leave the show after only a couple of seasons.

But before McGuinness and Flintoff have even taken the reins, some fans are already writing the two incoming Top Gear hosts off as unworthy of airtime. “I hate to say this, but why can’t we just stop Top Gear’s suffering and let it die,” tweeted one (former) fan back in October. “After seeing the news this morning I think Top Gear has finally nailed the lid onto its coffin,” tweeted another.

It’s worth noting that Rory Reid won’t depart entirely from the Top Gear enterprise, staying on to host the wrap-up show Extra Gear. But many fans, it seems, still aren’t content with the replacements that BBC has managed to find in the wake of the departure of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May several years ago.

Of course, the news of the latest Top Gear host shakeup only has so much bearing on hardcore General Motors fans, as naturally, the automaker’s products don’t feature very prominently on the show. That said, the most recent broadcasted series – No. 25 – did feature Rory Reid at the wheel of a 2018 Chevy Camaro ZL1 1LE, receiving shouted track driving instructions from pro driver Sabine Schmitz.
